Senior Partner, has been a practicing attorney for over 30 years, the majority devoted exclusively to Social Security law. In 1979, he was one of the three founding members of the National Organization of Social Security Claimant Represent- atives (NOSSCR), the only nationally recognized group of attorneys specializing in Social Security law.
As past president, member of the executive committee, and current member of the Council of Past Presidents, he has seen NOSSCR grow into a 4,000-member organization. As part of his duties, he has given over 200 presentations on various aspects of the Social Security Act, and has conducted numerous training seminars for attorneys just starting practice. He has also been a member of the editorial board of West Publishing Company's SOCIAL SECURITY REPORTING SERVICE, since its inception in 1985. In 1993, Mr. Weisberg was presented with the NOSSCR Pro Bono Award for legal services to the poor.
Mr. Weisberg has conducted more than a dozen training seminars over the past year for social workers and case managers. He has been authorized to issue continuing education credits by the Michigan Social Work Continuing Education Collaborative, and the Case Managers Association. There will be a State wide seminar for health care professionals that has been scheduled for Mr. Weisberg on March 29, 2012.
Principal Partner, has been responsible for the transition of the firm to one devoted exclusively to Social Security law. He has been in practice since 1977, and oversees the work product of our support staff along with maintaining a very busy caseload. Indeed, Mr. Walkon has probably handled as many hearings as any other attorney in the state. He has also given presentations in seminars as well as to various organizations. Because of his diverse legal background before devoting his practice exclusively to Social Security law, he brings an effective and unique style of advocacy that has proven successful over the years. He is known for his thorough development of the medical record, as well as his concentration on detail. His ability to articulate his client’s case in a manner most favorable to the client is well respected by his peers and the administrative law judge alike.
Associate Attorney, has been with The Law Center since 1986. Ms. Spencer received her Juris Doctorate, cum laude, from Michigan State University and her Bachelor of Arts from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Ms. Spencer clerked at law firms in New York City and Boston prior to joining The Law Center. She is accomplished in writing persuasive facts & law treatises and legal briefs in support of client claims. Additionally, she has argued cases before the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals. This expertise has resulted in a number of federal court reversals of Social Security Administration denials. Ms. Spencer has exclusively practiced Social Security disability law her entire career, is a member of both the Michigan and D.C. bars and is a past president of the Social Security Section of the State Bar.
Associate Attorney, started with the firm as a law clerk in 1991 and became an associate attorney in 1992. Ms. Lee-Kaniowski clerked for a Federal Magistrate in the United States District Court, Eastern District of Michigan and with the Grand Traverse County Prosecutor's Office prior to joining The Law Center. She received her Juris Doctorate from University of Detroit School of Law. She served as the Chairperson of the Social Security Lawyers Section of the State Bar of Michigan from 1998 to 1999. Ms. Lee-Kaniowski has given many presentations on Social Security Disability. She has argued cases before the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals and has received Federal Court reversals from both the Eastern and Western District Courts in Michigan. Ms. Lee-Kaniowski devotes her entire practice to Social Security Law. She handles cases throughout the entire process and is particularly active in handling initial applications.
Michael J. Plowman joined the firm in 2005 upon completion of his Juris Doctorate at Thomas M. Cooley Law School. Michael earned his undergraduate degree from Michigan State University. He enjoys being a Social Security Disability Attorney because it gives him ample opportunity to the help those in need. Outside the office Michael enjoys spending time with his wife Sarah and their three children Alessandra, Dean, and Henry. His responsibilities include the application process and hearings.
Associate Attorney, joined the firm as a law clerk in 2008. Ms. Walkon received her Juris Doctorate from Wayne State University Law School in Detroit where she worked at the Disability Law Clinic, assisting low-income individuals with disabilities on a range of issues, including SSI/SSDI, health insurance, and special education. Ms. Walkon also holds a Master of Arts from Columbia University in New York City, and a Bachelor of Science, with distinction, from Indiana University in Bloomington. Before becoming a lawyer, Heidi was a special education teacher at the high school level, and also worked in the healthcare industry. Ms. Walkon’s success lies in thoroughly developing the medical record and advocating for her clients at all stages, from the initial application to the hearing in front of an Administrative Law Judge. Ms. Walkon devotes her practice exclusively to Social Security disability law.
Associate Attorney, joined the firm in 2009, and is the newest member of the legal staff. His responsibilities include handling cases from the initial application process through to hearing, and when necessary, to the Appeals Council. Mr. Guerrero received his Juris Doctor from Wayne State University Law School in 2008 and he holds a Bachelor of Arts, with distinction, from the University of Michigan-Dearborn, in International Studies with an emphasis in International Affairs and Spanish Language and Culture. Mr. Guerrero's prior experience includes immigration law, family law, and workers' compensation law. Mr. Guerrero is licensed to practice law in Michigan and is a member of the National Organization of Social Security Claimants' Representatives (NOSSCR), as well as the Hispanic Bar Association of Michigan. He is fluent in Spanish.
